Planning a wet-weather wedding in South East Queensland
Published October 2026 · Sean Harman
In South East Queensland the driest months for a wedding are typically August to September, and the wettest are January to March. Whatever the month, plan for a covered backup for your ceremony, build a little buffer into your timeline, and tell your suppliers the plan in advance. Rain rarely ruins a wedding. A missing plan does.
When is Brisbane wettest and driest?
These are the Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for Brisbane. February is the wettest month, averaging 176.1 mm, and September is the driest at 28.6 mm. Over a year Brisbane averages about 83 days with at least 1 mm of rain, and about 1065 mm in total.

| January | 140.0 | 8.5 |
| February | 176.1 | 9.7 |
| March | 149.2 | 10.0 |
| April | 64.2 | 7.2 |
| May | 69.2 | 6.2 |
| June | 56.4 | 6.0 |
| July | 31.1 | 4.0 |
| August | 34.2 | 3.8 |
| September | 28.6 | 3.7 |
| October | 86.6 | 7.2 |
| November | 101.8 | 8.0 |
| December | 137.9 | 8.8 |
Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the most popular wedding seasons in the region. October and November are popular for good reason, though rain days rise from about 7 in October to about 8 in November, so a backup plan still matters.
A simple rain plan
- Ask your venue about a wet-weather option for the ceremony and portraits: a covered space, a marquee or an indoor room.
- Decide when you will make the call, for example 24 hours before or two hours before, and who tells the guests.
- Build buffer into the timeline so a short storm does not squeeze portraits or speeches.
- Bring clear umbrellas or plan for covered walkways for photos.
- Tell your photographer and videographer the plan so everyone moves together.
Will rain affect my wedding film?
If you do not mind getting a little wet, we continue as normal. The equipment I use is professional grade, and your day gets captured whatever the weather. Rain films have a mood of their own: soft light, reflections and plenty of real emotion. Drone footage is the exception, because it depends on weather and location. See the drone guide.
Storm season
Storms are most common in the warmer months, and heavy rain can arrive quickly. For outdoor weddings between November and March, have a covered option agreed in writing with your venue.
Tell me about your venue and date and I will talk you through how I would film it in the rain. Let's check your date.
