About State Library of Queensland

The State Library sits at South Bank beside the Brisbane River, with open terraces, concrete planters and a wall of city towers behind. It is a city wedding with an architectural backdrop.

Your wedding day at State Library of Queensland

The ceremony. The Queensland Terrace is open air with city views and the River Decks hang over the river bank, so the vows are made outdoors with the river close.

Portraits. In my film here, the couple and their bridal party walk a concrete path between planters with the glass towers of the city behind them. After dark the library suggests returning to see the cityscape light up, which suits a short couple's portrait session.

The reception. The Red Box has full-length windows that make it feel suspended over the river, for dinner receptions on Friday to Sunday evenings.

Why couples choose it

Couples choose the State Library for a city wedding with architecture and character: concrete, glass, greenery and water, in a location that is easy for guests and surrounded by South Bank's parklands for portraits.

What couples say

Couples who have married here describe the Queensland Terrace as a space that feels made for weddings. They say the team is experienced, enjoys hosting weddings and is happy to work around your suppliers and your guests.

Filming a wedding at State Library of Queensland

With Sarah & Sam, I filmed moments like the couple walking with their bridal party between concrete planters and glass towers in the middle of the city. Read their story.

The Queensland Terrace is open air, so the light changes with the sky, and the River Decks sit over the river with a tree-shaded smaller deck. The library itself suggests coming back after dark to see the cityscape light up, and the Red Box has full-length windows that make it feel suspended over the river. The atrium fills the building with natural light. Ask the library about its rules for photography and filming, and whether your photographer and videographer can use the grounds and the art gallery precinct during your time slot.

The building's lines, planters and open terraces make for striking, graphic frames, and the river decks give a softer backdrop for the ceremony. I will ask which space you have booked so I can plan around the light, and we can leave room in the timeline for portraits along the river at South Bank.
